KING'S SCORES THREE IN EIGHTH TO OVERCOME FDU, 3-2

MADISON, NJ – Junior pitcher Paul Giovannoli scattered eight hits over nine complete innings and the King’s College baseball team pieced together a three-run eighth inning to post a 3-2 comeback victory over FDU-Florham Friday in Madison, NJ.

With the win, the Monarchs improved to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in Freedom Conference play, while the Devils dropped to 5-8 and 2-2 Freedom.

Monarch junior Vince Budzyn would lead off the eighth with a walk, followed by a single from freshman third baseman Jon Venarchick.  Junior first baseman Caleb Calarco then delivered an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1. Sophomore outfielder Matt Livoy  then lofted a sacrifice fly to score Venarchick and tie the game 2-2.

After Calarco was thrown out attempting to steal second base, Rob Medlock reached first base on a walk. Josh Faust would then move Medlock to third with a base hit, setting the table for senior outfielder Jeff Wells who smacked an RBI single to put the Monarchs ahead 3-2.

FDU started the scoring in the second inning on an RBI double by sophomore designated hitter Tom Cifrodella and made the score 2-0 in the fifth on an RBI single by freshman second baseman Joey Santillo.

Calarco went 3-for-5 with an RBI and sophomore shortstop JR Graver finished 2-for-4 for the Monarchs. Giovannoli improved to 3-0 on the year, allowing two runs, one which was earned, striking out two while walking one batter.  The Monarch hurler finished the game strong, retiring the Devils in order each of the last four innings.

Santillo went 2-for-4 with an RBI and junior outfielder Lucas Cittone was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Sophomore pitcher Larry Fabrizio took the loss for the Devils giving up three runs on seven hits in 7.2 innings of work.
