KING'S BASEBALL TEAM DOWNS WILKES 9-1

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's baseball team opened MAC Freedom Conference play with a 9-1 victory over cross-town rival Wilkes University Friday at Betzler Fields.

With the win, King's improved to 5-6 overall while Wilkes slipped to 4-3.

King's opened the scoring with two runs in the first when Caleb Calarco walked and scored on a triple by Matt Livoy. Rob Medlock then followed with a run-scoring double. The Monarchs added a run in the second when J.R. Graver reached base on an error and eventually scored from third on a bases-loaded walk by Wilkes starter Mike Toomey.

Wilkes would cut the lead to 2-1 in the third when Eric Wetzel doubled to center and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kyle Follweiler.

The Monarchs would respond with a run in the fourth when Vince Budzyn singled and scored on a base hit up the middle by Livoy to up the lead to 4-1.

King's would added a pair of runs in the sixth when Graver led off the inning with a single. From there, Vince Budzyn would reach base and an error on the throw allowed both runners to advance to second and third with no outs. Livoy followed with a two-run single to push the score to  6-1.

The Monarchs closed out the scoring with three runs in the eighth. Matt Colgan and Calarco led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Livoy would reach base on the fourth Wilkes error of the game, allowing Colgan to score from second while Calarco moved to third. Medlock then delivered an RBI single while Victor Sierra lofted a sacrifice fly to plate Livoy with the final run of the game.

Livoy led the Monarchs by going 3-for-4 with two runs and five RBI. Budzyn was also 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Calarco went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs while Medlock and Jeremy Faust added two hits each.

Casey Kulago led with Wilkes with two of the Colonels six base hits.

Paul Giovannoli picked up the win for King's, allowing six hits over eight innings, walking one while striking out four batters.  Mark Yankowski pitched the final inning for the Monarchs, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Toomey took the loss for Wilkes, allowing four runs, three which were earned, on seven hits in five innings of work.

The teams are slated to complete their three-game series Saturday at 12:00 noon with a doubleheader at Wilkes Artillery Park in Kingston.
