KING'S BASEBALL DOWNS
WILKES 13-4 IN FIRST OF THREE-GAME SET
WILKES-BARRE - The King's
College baseball team slammed three home runs and six total extra base
hits as the Monarchs posted an important 13-4 Freedom Conference victory
over Wilkes University Friday at Artillery Park.
With the win, King's improved to 21-12 overall and 8-8 in conference
play while Wilkes slipped to 22-14-1 and 10-6 in league competition.
The win was crucial for the Monarchs who entered the weekend deadlocked
with Drew University for the fourth and final Freedom Conference playoff
berth. Drew dropped a 13-8 verdict to FDU-Florham in the first of its
season-ending three-game set.
King's needs to win one of two games against Wilkes on Saturday to
clinch the final playoff spot as the Monarchs own the head-to-head
tiebreaker over Drew based on winning two-of-three games played between
the teams during the season.
King's took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Matt Livoy doubled and
later scored on a sacrifice fly from by Josh Faust. King's then
plated four runs in the third inning when Jason Siebert led off with a
solo home run and Rob Medlock hit a towering three-run home run over the
left centerfield fence to give the Monarchs a 5-0 lead.
In the fourth inning King's would add three more runs, keyed by a
two-run double from Livoy and an RBI single from Faust. In the fifth,
Nick Sorino belted a solo home run, the Monarchs third round-tripper of
the game, to extend the King's lead to 9-0.
Faust was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while Jeff Wells was 2-for-4
with a triple, two runs, and two RBI. Caleb Calarco was 2-for- with an
RBI double while Livoy went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs, and two
RBI. Siebert chipped in by scoring three runs.
Paul Giovannoli picked up the win for King's, improving to 6-1 on the
year. The Monarch sophomore scattered nine hits and allowed four runs,
two which were earned, while striking out five batters.
King's will host Wilkes in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Betzler
Fields.
