KING'S BASEBALL OUT SLUGS MARYWOOD, 14-12

WILKES-BARRE -- Jeff Wells belted two home runs, including a grand slam as the King's College baseball team posted a wild 14-12 victory over Marywood University Wednesday at Betzler Fields.

With the win, King's improved to 17-9 on the year while Marywood fell to 15-17.

Marywood built a 6-1 lead after four inning when the Monarchs exploded for 10 runs in the fifth, keyed by Wells' bases loaded shot and a three-run double from Matt Livoy as the Monarchs took a 11-6 advantage.

Marywood would counter with six runs in the top of the sixth inning on RBI singles from Chris Lewis, Jason Kromko, and Ryan Clark, while Dennis Hricenak was hit by a pitch to with the bases loaded to force in another run to take a 12-11 lead.

King's scored its final three runs of the game in the bottom half of the sixth when Jeremy Faust singled would later score on a single from Wells. Caleb Calarco drew a walk before Nick Sorino doubled to plate Wells and Calarco to give the Monarchs a 14-12 lead. Neither team would score over the final three innings as King's held on for the victory.

Wells was 3-for-5 with three runs and six RBI, including a fourth-inning solo home run. Mike Venarchick was 3-for-4 with two runs while Sorino was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Livoy went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Buckley was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Brian Burden picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Branden Kieffer. Burden pitched two and a thirds inning and allowed one run. Tim Granquist picked up his third save of the season with a hitless ninth inning.

Mike Piercy led Marywood with a 3-for-4 showing with three runs and three RBI. Lewis, Kevin Zaleski, Pat Audia and Josh Smith had two hits each for the Pacers. Mark Granquist, younger brother of the Monarch closer Tim, took the loss in relief, allowing seven runs on five hits.

King's will next host FDU-Florham Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Betzler Fields.
