KING'S BASEBALL SPLIT WITH DREW
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College
baseball team broke open a scoreless tie with three runs in the sixth
inning as the Monarchs posted a 3-0 victory over Drew University to
salvage a doubleheader split Tuesday at Betzler Fields.
With the win, King's stands at 10-4
overall and 3-2 in Freedom Conference play. Drew, which won the first game
of the twin bill by a 3-2 count, is 3-8-1 overall and 1-4 in conference
play.
With the game tied 0-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Jason Siebert
reached base on an error, followed by a single from Dan Buckley. After a
successful double-steal advanced both runners, Jeremy Faust was walked to
load the bases. King's would push across a run when Josh Faust was hit by
a pitch, followed by back-to-back sacrifice flies from Matt Livoy and Nick
Sorino to score Buckley and Jeremy Faust.
King's rode a strong effort from sophomore Caleb Calarco who was
impressive in his first outing of the year. Calarco allowed just five base
hits and struck out 10 batters.
In the opener, the Monarchs took a 2-0 lead in the second when J.R. Graver
reached base on an error and scored from second on a hit from Vince
Budzyn. Siebert then singled home Budzyn with the Monarchs second and
final run of the game.
After Drew cut the lead to 2-1 in the third, the Rangers plated the
eventual winning runs in the fourth inning. Joe Cardinale walked and Nate
Novak singled to start the inning. Ryan Mason came through with an RBI
single before Derek Haff stroked a two-out single to bring home Novak with
what proved to be the winning run.
King's freshman Joe Jenkins took the complete-game loss, allowing six hits
while striking out three batters.
Hicks had two hits to pace the Drew attack.
