KING'S-SCRANTON BASEBALL TEAMS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's
College and University baseball teams opened up Freedom Conference play
Saturday at Betzler Fields and walked away with a double-header split.
King's won the first game by a 7-3 count while the Royals took the
nightcap 3-1. With he split, King's stands at 5-4 on the year while
the Royals are 1-1 after making their season debut.
In the opener, King's rode the arm of sophomore Paul Giovannoli who
improved to 3-0 by scattered eight hits in a seven-inning complete-game
victory. The Monarchs took a 2-0 lead in the second when Nick Sorino
reached base on an error and Rob Medlock walked. With two out, J.R. Graver
delivered a two-run single to put King's on top.
The Monarchs added three more in the fourth inning when Matt Livoy
and Medlock would single, and later scored on a base hit from Jeremy
Faust, who would later score on an error to push the lead to 5-0.
Scranton scored three runs in the fifth when John Sheehan and Mike Cottone
singled and would later score on an infield throwing error. Dennis Johnson
would single and scored on a double from Dominic McNulty.
King's closed out the scoring with two runs in the sixth when Caleb
Calarco was hit by a pitch, then stole second base. After a Nick Sorino
single, Medlock's sacrifice bunt gave the Monarchs runners at second and
third. Faust then delivered a two-run single to plate Calarco and
Sorino. Faust and Graver led King's with two hits each.
In the nightcap, the Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd when Nick
Speakman was hit by a pitch and would eventually score from third on an
infield ground out from Mike Venarchick.
Scranton took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Joe Cice walked. After pinch
runner Kevin Johnson moved to second on a wild pitch, Nick Rodio delivered
an RBI single. Sheehan later singled in Rodio to give the Royals their
first led of the day.
Scranton then scored the final runs of the game in the sixth when Chris
Boehme singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Nick
Costanza came through with an RBI single up the middle to plate Boehme and
give the Royals a 4-3 lead.
Sheehan led Scranton with two hits in the game. Freshman hurler John
Gennaoui was solid for the Royals in tossing a complete-game three-hitter
while striking out five batters. Monarch freshman Joe Jenkins took the
loss, allowing two runs on four hits in four innings of work.
