KING’S CLINCHES FREEDOM CONFERENCE
PLAYOFF BERTH WITH 8-1 BASEBALL WIN OVER WILKES
(Wilkes-Barre Twp., PA) - King’s
College scored four times in the fourth inning
and never looked back in scoring an 8-1 Freedom Conference baseball
win over Wilkes University on Friday
afternoon at Betzler Fields.
The Monarchs, who improve
to 19-14-1 overall and 11-5 in the conference, clinched
their first playoff berth since 1996 with the victory. Wilkes sees
their records fall to 24-12-1 overall
and 7-9 in conference play.
With one out in the fourth, King’s
strung together six consecutive hits to
score four times. Singles by Josh Faust, Geoff Ashton and Jeremy Faust
loaded the bases. Rob Medlock followed
with a two-run double to give the Monarchs
the lead.
Vince Budzyn then slapped a single to score Jeremy Faust.
An errant throw from the outfield also allowed Medlock to score and
up the lead to 4-0. Bill Drazdowski
would contribute a single to put runners
on first and third, but Wilkes hurler Kevin Konschak would induce
Jason Siebert into a double play to end
the frame.
The Monarchs tacked on three runs in
the sixth inning to extend their lead.
Jeremy Faust led off with a single and moved to second on a one-out
single by Budzyn. After Barak Gohn, who
came on to replace Konschak on the hill
for the Colonels, got Drazdowski to pop up in the infield for the
second out, he issued back-to-back walks
to Siebert and Nick Sorino to force in
a run and make it 5-0. Charlie Jenkins delivered two runs with a single
to push the lead to 7-0.
King’s would score their final run
with two outs in the seventh frame. Medlock
tripled and scored on a single by Budzyn to give the Monarchs an 8-0
lead.
Wilkes finally cracked the scoreboard
in the ninth inning. Mike Spotts doubled
with two outs and scored on a single by Matt LoPresto.
Matt Loringer tossed a complete game to
pick up the pitching victory for
King’s. He allowed only six hits and one run, while striking out six.
Konschak, who was tagged for 11 hits and six
runs in 5.2 innings of work, suffered
the loss.
Medlock led the Monarchs 15-hit attack with a single, double and
triple. Budzyn finished with three
singles. Jenkins, Ashton and Jeremy Faust
had two singles each.
The Colonels had six different players
with a hit, including doubles by both
Spotts and Tyler Trutt.
The three-game series between Wilkes
and King’s will continue on Saturday
when they play a twin bill at Artillery Park beginning at 1:00 p.m.
