KING'S BASEBALL SWEEPS FDU, ASSUMES FIRST PLACE IN MAC FREEDOM

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team moved into sole possession of first place in the MAC Freedom Conference after posting a doubleheader sweep over FDU-Florham Saturday at Betzler Fields.

King's won the first game 6-2 before capturing the nightcap 13-3. The Monarchs now stand at 16-13-1 overall and 10-5 in the MAC Freedom Conference. FDU slipped to 18-9 and 7-7 in conference play. King's, which was picked to finish fifth in the seven-team Freedom Conference, currently stands ahead of Delaware Valley (10-6) and DeSales (9-6) in the league standings.

In the opener, King's took a 3-0 in the third inning when Josh and Jeremy Faust both singled. Both runners would advance on a passed ball before Josh Faust would score on a wild pitch. After Geoff Ashton walked and stole second base, Bill Drazdowski delivered a two-run single to give the Monarchs a 3-0 advantage.

King's added a pair of runs in the fifth when Nick Sorino doubled and scored on a triple by Charlie Jenkins. Josh Faust would then follow with an RBI single to give the Monarchs a 5-1 lead.

Josh Faust was 2-for-3 and scored a run while Drazdowski was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Matt Loringer (5-3) picked up the pitching victory, scattering eight hits and struck out four batters in going the distance.

In the nightcap, FDU took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning, but King's quickly countered in the bottom half of the inning. Jason Seibert and Sorino drew walks before Charlie Jenkins ripped a three-run home run.

The Monarchs put the game away with seven runs in the fourth inning, aided by four walks, a hit batter, and an FDU error.

Ashton paced the Monarchs with a 4-for-4 showing with two runs and three RBI. Jenkins was 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs. Chris Persak picked up the pitching victory, allowing eight hits while striking out five batters in the complete game effort.
