KING'S BASEBALL SWEPT BY DEL-VALLEY

NORRISTOWN -- The Delaware Valley College baseball team improved to 11-5 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Freedom Conference as the Aggies swept a doubleheader from visiting King's College at Latshaw Field. Delaware Valley pulled out a 5-3 victory in the first game and took the nightcap, 13-8.

The Aggies have now won eight straight games, including seven over the last six days. They are four short of the school record of 12 consecutive wins set on two occasions. The Monarchs, who just came off winning two of three games from defending Freedom Conference champion DeSales University, fell to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

The first game saw Delaware Valley jump out to a 3-0, first-inning lead thanks to three hits and a King's error. Sean Meister doubled and scored one batter later on Mark Roth's RBI single. Roth later scored on a Monarch miscue and his younger brother Travis singled in the third run.

The Aggies added to the lead in the second inning as Ryan Burza and A.J. DeNardo opened with back-to-back singles and moved up a base each on Meister's sacrifice bunt. Mark Roth brought Burza home with a sacrifice fly.

King's made it a one-run ballgame in the third Adam Tkaczyk and Dan Buckley had back-to-back singles and they both scored two batters later on Jason Siebert's single. Nick Sorino then delivered a two-out double to score the third run of the inning.

The Monarchs threatened again in the fifth as they loaded the bases with one out. However, Delaware Valley starter Zeke Boren got Sorino to ground into an inning-ending double play. The Aggies then picked up an insurance run in the sixth as Mike Gargiulo reached on a King's error and scored on Meister's two-out triple to right field.

Boren improved to 2-1 as he allowed three runs and four hits over seven innings. Meister went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple, while Travis Roth also had a multiple-hit game with two hits in three at-bats.

Matt Loringer took the loss for the Monarchs and fell to 1-2 despite allowing just two earned runs in six innings of work. Four separate players had hits for King's in the game.

The nightcap saw Delaware Valley rally from 4-0 and 6-5 deficits to post the five-run victory. King's scored three runs before an out was recorded in the first inning Sorino was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Charlie Jenkins knocked in a pair with a single to right-center. The Monarchs upped the lead in the second as Tkaczyk scored on a passed ball.

However, Delaware Valley fought back and tied the game with four runs in the third inning. Meister drew a bases-loaded walk and Mark Roth followed with a two-run to single center. Bret Thiel made it 4-4 with an RBI single to left field to bring home Meister. The Aggies took a brief 5-4 advantage in the fourth on an RBI single by Meister, but King's answered in the fifth as Jenkins's double to center brought home Sorino and Siebert for a 6-5 lead.

Delaware Valley took the lead for good in its half of the fifth by scoring three times on four hits and one King's error. Brandon McCabe and Thiel scored on a throwing error and Ken Keiffer added to the lead with an RBI single. The Aggies then put the game away with a five-spot in the sixth. DeNardo doubled in one run and Mike Gargiulo doubled in a pair with a shot to left field.

Keiffer pitched just one-third of an inning but picked up the win in relief and improved to 2-0 on the year. DeNardo notched his second save with two innings of work. DeNardo and Thiel each went 3-for-3 while Gargiulo, Meister and Mark Roth knocked in two runs apiece.

Jenkins went 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs for the Monarchs. Siebert added three hits and two runs scored. Rob Medlock fell to 2-1 as he started and went four innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) and nine hits.

King's will return to action Wednesday when the Monarchs travel to Scranton to face Marywood University at 3:00 p.m.
