SCRANTON BASEBALL SQUAD DOWNS
KING'S, 9-7
WILKES-BARRE -- Mike Cotton went
3-for-5 with two RBI and Mike Urbanski added three hits and scored a pair
of runs as the University of Scranton posted a 9-7 victory over King's
College in an MAC Freedom Conference matchup at Betzler Fields.
The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the third
when Matt Beggin singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Astino.
Scranton added a run in the fourth when Urbanovich doubled and scored on a
single by Les Carter.
King's took a 3-2 lead in the bottom
half of the fourth when Jeff Wells singled and scored on a double by
Charlie Jenkins. Nick Sorino reached base on an error before Jason
Melendez singled home Jenkins to knot the score at 2-2. Sorino would later
score on a Scranton error to give the Monarchs their first lead of the
game.
The Royals would tie the score with a
run in the fifth inning as Beggin walked, stole second, and scored on a
single by Cottone.
Scranton would push across four runs in
the sixth on the strength of a pair of King's errors. Beggin and Dom
McNulty had RBI singles while Cottone added a sacrifice fly to increase
the Royal lead to 7-3.
King's scored two in the sixth when
Sorino doubled and later scored on a bases-loaded walk. Melendez would
walk and eventually score on a wild pitch to cut the margin to 7-5.
Scranton added a run in the seventh
when Brian Grady singled and score on an infield out by Carter. The Royals
took a 9-5 lead in the eighth when Astino reached base on an error and
would later score on another Monarch error.
King's would attempt to rally in the
ninth when Rispoli singled and scored on a double from Jeremy Sauers.
Jenkins would drive home Sauers with a double but the Monarch comeback
would stall.
Beggin had two hits and scored three
runs for Scranton while Astinio added a pair of RBI. Derik Bernhardt
earned the pitching victory, going five and one-third innings and allowed
five runs, three which were earned. Bernhardt gave way to Bryan Reed who
pitched the final two and two-thirds innings to pick up the save.
King's was paced by Jenkins and Sorino
who were both 3-for-5. Matt Loringer was the losing pitcher for the
Monarchs, allowing nine runs, three which were earned, in eight innings.
King's will travel to Scranton Saturday
to play a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. at Connell Park.
