SCRANTON BASEBALL SQUAD DOWNS KING'S, 9-7

WILKES-BARRE -- Mike Cotton went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Mike Urbanski added three hits and scored a pair of runs as the University of Scranton posted a 9-7 victory over King's College in an MAC Freedom Conference matchup at Betzler Fields.

The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the third when Matt Beggin singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Astino. Scranton added a run in the fourth when Urbanovich doubled and scored on a single by Les Carter.

King's took a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the fourth when Jeff Wells singled and scored on a double by Charlie Jenkins. Nick Sorino reached base on an error before Jason Melendez singled home Jenkins to knot the score at 2-2. Sorino would later score on a Scranton error to give the Monarchs their first lead of the game.

The Royals would tie the score with a run in the fifth inning as Beggin walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Cottone.

Scranton would push across four runs in the sixth on the strength of a pair of King's errors. Beggin and Dom McNulty had RBI singles while Cottone added a sacrifice fly to increase the Royal lead to 7-3.

King's scored two in the sixth when Sorino doubled and later scored on a bases-loaded walk. Melendez would walk and eventually score on a wild pitch to cut the margin to 7-5.

Scranton added a run in the seventh when Brian Grady singled and score on an infield out by Carter. The Royals took a 9-5 lead in the eighth when Astino reached base on an error and would later score on another Monarch error.

King's would attempt to rally in the ninth when Rispoli singled and scored on a double from Jeremy Sauers. Jenkins would drive home Sauers with a double but the Monarch comeback would stall.

Beggin had two hits and scored three runs for Scranton while Astinio added a pair of RBI. Derik Bernhardt earned the pitching victory, going five and one-third innings and allowed five runs, three which were earned. Bernhardt gave way to Bryan Reed who pitched the final two and two-thirds innings to pick up the save.

King's was paced by Jenkins and Sorino who were both 3-for-5. Matt Loringer was the losing pitcher for the Monarchs, allowing nine runs, three which were earned, in eight innings.

King's will travel to Scranton Saturday to play a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. at Connell Park.
