KING'S BASEBALL UPSETS DELAWARE
VALLEY, 3-1
DOYLESTOWN -- Freshman pitcher Gary
McDonald scattered seven hits over eight and two-thirds innings to lead
the King's College baseball team to a 3-1 upset over Delaware Valley
College in a MAC Freedom Conference matchup
Sunday in Doylestown,
The Aggies (22-12, 8-7 MAC), were
looking to clinch a MAC Freedom playoff
berth
with a victory but McDonald forced Delaware Valley to wait another day
with a solid effort on the hill.
The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the
third inning when Jason Melendez reached
base
on a fielder's choice and would eventually score on a single from Dan
Buckley. The Delaware Valley would tie the
score in their half of the inning
when Frank Panzullo walked and scored on a double from Mark Roth.
King's took a 2-1 lead in the fourth
when Jon Deroba walked and oved to
third
on a single by Charlie Jenkins. Jeremy Sauers would then loft a sacrifice
fly to centerfield to bring home Deroba with the go-ahead run. King's
added its final run in the seventh when Chris Rispoli singled and moved
to second on a sacrifice bunt by Geoff Ashton. Kalym DeJesus would then
come through with a clutch RBI single to give the King's its final 3-2
margin of victory.
McDonald struckout two batters and
walked five while allowing just four
batters
to reach as far as second base from the third inning on. After yielding
a two-out single in the ninth, Matt Loringer entered the game and picked
up the save by inducing a ground ball to first base for the game's final
out.
Jenkins and Rispoli led the Monarchs
with had two hits as King's improved to
10-20-1.
King's will host Marywood Tuesday at
3:00 p.m. at Betzler Fields.
