WILKES
BASEBALL COMPLETES SWEEP OF KING'S
KINGSTON -- The Wilkes University baseball team swept both ends of a
doubleheader with King's College on Saturday at Artillery Park. The
Colonels notched an 8-1 win in the opener, before posting an 8-2 win in
the nightcap.
The sweep improves Wilkes to 18-11-1 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
King's falls to 8-18-1 overall and 4-11 in conference play. The Colonels
also won the opening game of the series on Friday afternoon at King's by a
3-1 score.
In game one, Wilkes hurler Ryan Palos allowed only four hits in picking up
the complete-game victory. The junior struck out two and did not allow a
walk, while throwing only 84 pitches.
The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in their half of the first. Jason Melendez
led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Jeremy Sauers.
Wilkes would score five times in the second inning to take the lead for
good. Corey Yanoshak doubled with one out, and scored on back-to-back wild
pitches by Chris Persak. Adam Kowalczyk reached on an error and came in to
score on a triple by Tyler Trutt. After Matt Diltz popped out for the
second out of the inning, Scott Garger reached on an error, which allowed
Trutt to score and make it 3-1. Dave Morgan then lined an inside-the-park
homerun to make it 5-1.
The Colonels scored twice more in the third frame to extend their lead to
7-1. Mike Spotts led off with a long homerun to dead center field. Matt
Kaskie then drew a walk. Yanoshak connected for his second double of the
game to move Kaskie to third. A single by Trutt would score Kaskie.
Wilkes added an insurance run in the sixth when Morgan drew a two-out walk
and scored on a double by Charles Hampton.
Yanoshak and Trutt were two-time hitters for the Colonels. Yanoshak had
two doubles, while Trutt had a single and triple.
Jean-Paul Lucke had two of the Monarchs four hits.
In the nightcap, Wilkes jumped on King's starter Bill Serifan for seven
runs in the first three innings on their way to the win.
The Colonels scored three times in the first inning thanks to a pair of
Monarch errors. Both Diltz and Garger reached on errors to start the
inning and put runners on first and second. Morgan scored Diltz with a
double which allowed Garger to advance to third. A groundout by Hampton
scored Garger and made it 2-0. With one-out and Morgan on third, Spotts
struck out. The pitch was dropped and the throw to first allowed Morgan to
come in with the third run.
With two outs and Garger standing on second in the third inning, Hampton
lined a single to make it 4-0. An error on the Monarchs allowed Spotts to
reach and Hampton to move to second. After both runners moved up on a wild
pitch, Kaskie hammered an inside-the-park homer to extend the lead to 7-0.
Wilkes starter Jim Casey was cruising along until the sixth inning when
the Monarchs scored both of their runs. Jason Melendez singled and moved
to third on a single by Jon Deroba. Deroba would advance to second when
the Colonels attempted to throw out Melendez at third. A wild pitch by
Casey allowed Melendez to score and Deroba to move to third. Casey then
walked Jeremy Sauers to put runners at the corners. Kyle Newberry singled
to score Deroba and move Sauers to third. Caey then got Andy French to fly
out for the initial out of the frame. Dan Buckley then had an infield
single to load the bases.
Jason McDermott came on to replace Casey and immediately put an end to the
King's rally by getting Geoff Ashton to ground into a double play.
Wilkes would tack on a single run in the sixth on an rbi-single by Kaskie,
and McDermott would toss a perfect seventh inning to close the door and
earn his league-leading ninth save.
Casey pitched five and one-third innings and allowed only six hits and two
runs to notch the victory.
Kaskie had two hits, including the homer, and drove in three runs for
Wilkes. Hampton, who tripled and had two runs batted in, and Diltz each
contributed two hits.
Newberry was the lone two-time hitter for the Monarchs.
