KING'S BASEBALL HOLDS ON FOR 9-8 WIN OVER DREW
WILKES-BARRE -- Andy French belted a key RBI single with two out in the
bottom-of-the-ninth inning to power the King's College baseball team to a
9-8 victory over Drew University in a MAC Freedom Conference game at
Wednesday at Betzler Fields.
King's led 8-6 entering the ninth but Drew pushed across a pair of runs to
tie the game. Brian Evans and John Tarantino led off the inning with
singles and moved to third and second base on a bunt by Chris Cyriax.
Evans would score on a wild pitch before Scott McNeil¹s RBI single
tied the game at 8-8. French would then come in to pitch in relief and
induced the final two Ranger outs.
In their final at-bats, John-Paul Lucke walked with one out and moved to
second on a single by Geoff Ashton. Two batters later, French
drilled a line drive deep into the left centerfield gap to score Lucke
with the winning run as the Monarchs improved to 5-11-1 overall and 1-5 in
MAC Freedom competition. Ironically, French also picked up the
pitching win thanks to his game-winning hit.
In all, King's registered 17 hits as Jon Derboa was 3-for-5 and scored
three runs. Kyle Newberry was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Chris Rispoli
was 2-for-4 with two RBI, French was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Kalym
DeJesus went 3-for-4.
Drew was led by McNeil who was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Evans was 2-for-3
with an RBI while Tarantino was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Ryan Klutsarits took
the loss in relief.
King's and Drew will play a doubleheader Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in Madison,
NJ.
