SCRANTON WOMEN, ALBRIGHT MEN CAPTURE MAC SWIMMING TITLES

(Widener's Keeler, Albright's Ikeler named Outstanding Swimmers 

WILKES-BARRE -- The University of Scranton women and Albright College men led from start to finish and were crowned team champions of the 2004 Middle Atlantic Conference Swimming Championships which concluded Sunday at the Wilkes-Barre C.Y.C. 

The Lady Royals posted 721 points and were followed by Albright (591), Juniata (451.5), and Widener (444).  The Lion men outdistanced the field with 869.5 points and were followed by Widener (684.5), Lycoming (445) and Scranton (408)

Over 300 swimmers competed in the three-day event that was being held in Wilkes-Barre for the first time ever. King’s College served as the official host.

Individually, Widener University senior Shandra Keeler, a graduate of Bishop Hoban High School concluded a brilliant meet as she was honored with David B. Eavenson Most Outstanding Swimmer Award. Albright College junior Andy Ikeler was named the Eavenson Award winner on the men’s side.

Keeler won three gold medals during the competition and capped off her performance by winning the women’s 1650-freestyle with a MAC record and NCAA national qualifying provisional time of 17:58.21. She also captured the 500-freestyle on Friday before winning the 400-individual medley with an NCAA provisional time of 4:44.69 on Saturday.

Ikeler won the 500-freestyle as well as the 400-individual medley with a MAC record time of 4:16.44. He also placed second in the 200 butterfly.

Widener’s Matt Snyder, a Hanover Area product, won the men’s 200-breatstroke gold medal with a time of 2:13.58. Charlie Beatty of Albright was second at 2:14.93 while teammate Steven Dwyer finished third with a time of 2:19.41.

In the women’s 200-breaststroke, Kim Allen of Juniata claimed gold with a time of 2:25.14. Elizabehtown’s Christina Blaha was second at 2:30.79 while Meghan Shaw of Albright was third with a 2:32.87.

In the women’s 200-backstroke, Jill Palmiotto of Scranton won the event with a time of 2:13.94. Finishing second was Cindy Barner of Albright with a 2:14.37 while Widener’s Stephanie Olson was third at 2:16.71.

The men’s 200-backstroke was captured by Eric Daney of Albright with a time of 1:54.85. Widener teammates Dan Fay and Shawn McAuley were second and third with respective times of 2:00.95 and 2:01.45.

Keeler won the 1650-freestyle at 17:58.21 and was followed by Scranton teammates Kristen Best and Rosie Moran with respective times of 18:08.46 and 18:16.40. Keeler’s younger sister Shana, also of Scranton, was fourth at 18:45.25.

In the men’s 1650-freestyle, Matt Stumhofer of Albright captured gold with a 16:45.50. Widener teammates Mike Conlan and Mike McDevitt were second and third respectively with times of 16:56.98 and 17:01.93.

The women’s 100-freestyle event was won by Kathy Trainor of Juniata with a MAC record time of 53.56. Albright’s Erin Jagielski was second at 54.14 while Laura McVey of Albright placed third with a 54.84.

Jon Fonash of Widener captured the men’s 100-freestyle with a time of 47.95. Albright teammates Adam Fletcher and Matt Printz were second and third respectively with times of 48.38 and 48.92.

In the women’s 200-butterfly, Kim Conway of Widener captured the event with a time of 2:12.49. Scranton’s Erin Williams was second at 2:12.69 while Elizabethtown’s Keeley Trumbo was third at 2:16.84.

The men’s 200-butterfly was won by Brendan Connor of Scranton with a time of 1:59.58. Albright’s Andy Ikeler was second at 1:59.77 followed by Mike Colon of Widener with a 2:00.36.

The women’s 400-freestyle relay was captured by the Widener team of Laura McVey, Kathy Orme, Stephanie Olson, and Shandra Keeler with a time of 3:40.84. Placing second with a 3:41.29 was Albright’s entry of Erin Jagielski, Cindy Batner, Dana Heckman, and Margaret Jones. Finishing third was Andrea Nulton, Dana Gais, Kathy Trainor, and Amy Hanson of Juniata at 3:43.89

Winning the gold medal in the men’s 400-freestyle relay was the Albright team of Eric Daney, Adam Fletcher, Ray Walzer, and Matt Printz with a MAC record time of 3:10.91. Lycoming’s entry of Stuart Olsen, Steve Hawley, Jeff Swatkins, and Nate DeCapria placed second with a 3:13.53. Finishing third was the Widener team of Dan Fay, Andrew Sanderbeck, Ross Muldoon, and Jon Foondash at 3:15.89.

MAC “Coach of the Year” honors went to Scranton women’s coach Tomm Evans and Albright men’s coach John Stuhltrager.
