SCRANTON WOMEN, ALBRIGHT MEN CONTINUE TO LEAD MAC SWIM CHAMPIONSHIPS

WILKES-BARRE -- After the conclusion of two days at the Middle Atlantic Conference Swimming Championships at the Wilkes-Barre CYC, the University of Scranton women and Albright College men stood in first place heading into Sunday’s final round of competition.

The Lady Royals totaled 490 points, followed by Albright (404), Widener (297), Juniata (291.5), and Lycoming (272). The Lion men totaled 570.5 points, followed by Widener (448.5), Lycoming (317), Scranton (267), and Susquehanna (183.5).

In the women’s 400-individual medley, Widener’s Shandra Keeler, a Bishop Hoban graduate, placed first with a time of 4:44.69. Widener teammate Kim Conway was second at 4:48.16 while Kristen Best of Scranton finished third with a 4:50.75.

Andy Ikeler of Albright captured the men’s 400-individual medley with a MAC record time of 4:16.44. Widener’s Jonathan Kruper was second at 4:23.38 while Brendan Connors of Scranton placed third with a 4:25.05.

The women’s 100-butterfly was won by Erin Williams of Scranton who set a new MAC record with a time of 59.16. Albright’s Cindy Barner was second at 59.18, followed by Keeley Trumbo with a 1:01.12.

In the men’s 100-butterfly, Adam Fletcher of Albright finished first with a time of 52.77. Susquehanna’s Nick Hoover was second at 53.67 while Jeff Swatkins of Lycoming placed third with a 54.16.

Erin Jagielski of Albright won the women’s 200-freestyle with a time of 1:58.63. Scranton’s Jayne Smith placed second at 1:59.41, while Laura McVey of Widener was third with a 2:00.24.

Jon Fonash of Widener won the men’s 200-freestyle with a time of 1:45.64. Albright’s Matt Stumhofer was second at 1:47.57 while Benjamin Hatt finished third with a 1:47.73.

The women’s 100-breaststroke was captured by Kim Allen of Juniata with a time of 1:07.50. Elizabethtown’s Christina Blaha placed second at 1:08.59 while Meghan Shaw of Albright finished third with a 1:08.59.

In the men’s 100-breaststroke, Adam Fletcher of Albright won the event with a time of 1:00.82. He was followed by Widener’s Matt Snyder at 1:00.85 while Charlie Beatty of Albright placed third with a 1:01.02.

Cindy Barner of Albright won the 100-backstroke with a time of 1:00.33. Scranton’s Jill Palmiotto placed second at 1:01.74 while Kelly Sykes of Lycoming was third with a 1:02.89.

The men’s 100-backstroke was captured by Steve Hawley of Lycoming with a time of 54.07. Albright’s Eric Daney finished second at 54.55 while Dan Fay of Widener was third with a 54.55.

The women’s 200-medley relay was won by the Albright College team of Cindy Barner, Meghan Shaw, Mandi Carroll, and Erin Jagielski with a 1:52.71. Finishing second was Juniata’s squad of Amy Sutherland, Kim Allen, Kathy Trainor, and Amy Hanson with a time of 1:53.68. In third was the Scranton entry of Jill Palmiotto, Allyson Jengo, Erin Williams, and Katie McKenna.

In the men’s 200-medley relay, the Albright team of Eric Daney, Charlie Beatty, Adam Fletcher, and Matt Printz set a new MAC record at 1:37.00. Lycoming’s squad of Steve Hawley, Chris Mungro, Jeff Swatkins, and Nate DeCapria were second with a 1:38.35. Finishing third was the Widener team of Jon Kruper, Matt Snyder, Shawn McAuley, and Jon Fonash.

The women’s 800-freestyle relay was captured by the Scranton team of Michelle Kline, Kristen Best, Rosie Moran, and Jayme Smith with a time of 8:03.35. Placing second was the Widener entry of Stephanie Olson, Shandra Keeler, Shannon Mizikoski, and Laura McVey at 8:11.15. Finishing third was Juniata’s team of Andrea Nulton, Dana Gais, Kim Allen, and Amy Sutherland with a 8:17.02.

In the men’s 800-freestyle, the Albright team of Eric Daney, Matt Stumhofer, Ben Hatt, and Andy Ikeler placed first with a time of 7:11.91. Widener’s squad of Dan Fay, Andy Sanderbeck, Steve Pomella, and Jon Fonash were second at 7:14.86. Finishing third was Scranton’s entry of Billy Beyer, Dustin Partridge, Joe Mulhall, and Brian McKenzie with a 7:25.34.

Swimming will begin on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. with finals set for 5:00 p.m.
