SCRANTON WOMEN, ALBRIGHT MEN LEAD MAC SWIMMING AFTER ONE DAY

WILKES-BARRE -- The University of Scranton women and the Albright College men emerged as day-one leaders at the Middle Atlantic Conference Swimming Championships at the Wilkes-Barre C.Y.C. King’s College is serving as host of the event.

The Lady Royals totaled 216 points and were followed by Albright (175), Juniata (144) and Widener (130). King’s was in last with 24 points. The Albright men registered 216 points and were followed by Widener (194) and Lycoming (131). The Monarch men were ninth with 36 points.

In the women’s 500 freestyle Widener’s Shandra Keeler won the event with a 5:11.44. Kristen Best of Scranton was second with a 5:15.93 while Jayme Smith of Scranton was third at 5:19.32.

The men’s 500 freestyle was won by Andy Ikeler of Albright with a 4:46.36. He was followed by Jon Fonash of Widener with a 4:48.10 and Albright’s Matt Stumhofer at 4:48.65.

In the women’s 200 individual medley, Rebecca Fox of Lycoming won the event with a 2:15.90. Juniata’s Kim Allen was second at 2:15.94 while Kim Conway of Widener placed third with a 2:17.57.

Eric Daney of Albright captured the men’s 200 individual medley with a MAC record time of 1:57.89. He was followed by teammate Charlie Beatty of Albright with a 2:01.06 and Widener’s Jon Kruper at 2:01.09.

In the women’s 50 freestyle, Juniata’s Kathy Trainor set a new MAC record with a time of 24.80. Eric Jagielski of Albright was second at 24.89 while Widener’s Laura McVey was third with a 25.15.

On the men’s side, Steve Hawley of Lycoming won the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.62. Albright teammates Matt Printz and Ray Walzer were second and third respectively with times of 21.75 and 22.21.

The women’s 400 medley relay was won by the Albright team of Cindy Barner, Meghan Shaw, Mandi Carroll, and Erin Jagielski with a time of 4:05.01. Scranton’s entry of Jill Palmiotto, Allyson Jengo, Eric Williams, and Michelle Kline were second at 4:05.57. Elizabethtown’s Nicole Welch, Christina Blaha, Keeley Trumbo, and Kristen Kuc placed third with a 4:10.57.

The Widener team of Dan Fay, Matt Snyder, Shawn McAuley, and Jon Fonash won the 400 medley relay with a MAC record time of 3:32.90. They were followed by the Albright squad of Eric Daney, Charlie Beatty, Adam Fletcher, and Matt Printz with a 3:34.12. Steve Hawley, Chris Mungro, Josh Hogan, and Nate DeCapria of Lycoming were third at 3:40.51.

The Albright College team of Erin Jagielski, Dana Heckman, Margaret Jones, Cindy Barner won the women’s 200 freestyle relay with an MAC record 1:40.27. Widener’s team of Steph Olson, Kathy Orme, Shandra Keeler, and Laura McVey were second with a 1:41.13. The Juniata entry of Andrea Nulton, Dana Gais, Kathy Trainor, and Amy Hanson finished third at 1:41.22.

Lycoming’s team of Steve Hawley, Jeff Swatkins, Joshua Hogan, and Nate DeCapria won the men’s 200 freestyle relay with a 1:26:42. The Albright team of Adam Fletcher, Ray Walzer, Bob Stratton, and Matt Printz were second at 1:26.58. Widener’s team of Ross Muldoon, Kyle Kenny, Andy Sanderbeck, and Dan Fay were third with a 1:28.84.

The event will continue Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with finals set for 6:00 p.m.
