KING'S KOPEC 27th AT NCAA REGIONALS
CARLISLE -- King's College cross country standout Ed Kopec narrowly
missed a spot in the NCAA Division III National Championships as the
Monarch sophomore placed 27th in the NCAA Mid-East regional
Championships Saturday at Dickinson College.
Kopec, who ran a time of 29:18.9, was 27th in a field of 279 male
runners. The top three teams - Haverford, Carnegie-Mellon, and Allegheny
- had their top seven runners earn spots, while an aditional nine
runners earned spots. A total of 30 runners from the regional will
compete at the Division III national
championship race. Kopec's time was faster than eight of the runners who
will compete at nationals for Haverford, CMU, and Allegheny. For his efforts, Kopec was named to the Mid-East
Regional Team.
Other King's runners included Derek Call who was 124th with a 28:41.5
while Matt Hall finished 127th at 28:45.1. Justin Winters was 167th with
a time of 29:40.0 while Bob Hare ran a 32:37 to finish 230th. David
Davis was 238th at 33:43.5 while Vince Pecora rounded out the Monarch
men with a 34:01.1 to check in at 241st. As a team, King's finished 23rd
in the field of 41 teams.
The King's women's squad was paced by freshman Kelley Weidwald who was
106th in a field of 293 female runners with a time of 25:18.7. Other
Lady Monarch runners included Alison Taroli, 213th with a 28:13.2;
Shauna Crabb at 214th with a 28:14.9; and Christina Curcio who was 265th
with a 30:41.6. King's team chances were hurt when number-two runner
Maria DeMuro was injured during the race and did not finish. With just
four runners completing the race, the Lady Monarchs became ineligible
for team scoring.
