Call for judges

The 2017 Mid-Atlantic Regional Chemagination Competition which will be held on Sunday, June 4 from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, PA during the 2017 MARM sponsored by the Lehigh Valley and Susquehanna Valley Sections is in need of volunteers to serve as judges.

For this Chemagination, high school students are asked to imagine that they are living 25 years in the future and have been invited to write an article for ChemMatters, a magazine for high school students that focuses on the role of chemistry in everyday life. Students are also asked to design the magazine cover. The subject of the article is: “Describe a recent breakthrough or innovation in chemistry (and/or its applications) that has improved the quality of people’s lives today.” The article must be written to fit in one of four categories: Alternative Energy, Environment, Medicine/Health, or New Materials.

Judging would involve evaluation of the assigned articles about a week before the competition and then the interviewing of up to 6 teams during the competition on June 4. The criteria for evaluation are scientific thought, creativity, clarity, and thoroughness.

If you can help, or need more information, please contact Carol Stein at cmstein03@yahoo.com.

The Joseph Priestley House is located in the Susquehanna Valley Local Section in Northumberland. To commemorate Priestley's many scientific achievements, the American Chemical Society named its highest honour the Priestley Medal in 1922*.
