King’s Wins ECAC Championship!

Game 1 King's Vs. Dickinson - The Lady Monarchs rode a second seed ranking into the ECAC tournament. They opened up with an 8 inning 5-4 victory over host Dickinson. Michele Dlugosz led off the game with a double, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lisa Rizzo, and scored on an RBI single by Jen Hawker. Ryan Purdy hit a single, and Lauren Ricigliano followed with another single to score Hawker. Hawker would go on to hit 3 doubles in the game. Andrea Gagliardi, Hawker, and Purdy then combined for 2 more runs in the third to give King’s a 4-0 lead. Michelle Patches held Dickinson scoreless until the 4th, when they scored 3 runs. Karen Ball came in to finish out the inning. Dickinson then tied the game in the 7th. In the top of the 8th, Ball retired 2 batters before having to turn the ball back over to Patches, who recorded the 3rd out. In the bottom of the 8th, Rizzo led off with a single, moved to third on a double by Hawker, and scored on a game winning single by Purdy.

Game 2  King's Vs. Bethany - The Bethany contest proved to be even more exciting. Bethany scored a run in the first, and King’s answered in the 2nd. Purdy led off with a triple, and scored on Ricigliano’s single, to tie the game. The next run was not until the 5th, Courtney Coyle singled, moved around on a hit by Dlugosz, and scored on an RBI single by Rizzo. King’s scored again in the 6th, on a leadoff triple by Hawker and an RBI single by Purdy. The Monarchs took a 3-1 lead into the 7th. Bethany scored 3 runs to take a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the 7th. With 2 outs and the bases empty, Dlugosz hit a sharp line drive single to keep King’s alive. Rizzo followed with another single, to put runners on 1st & 2nd. Gagliardi then crushed a double to deep left-center field, to win the game with 2 RBI’s. Jess Ametrano & Patches combined efforts on the mound for the King’s win.

Game 3  King's Vs. Muhlenberg - Earlier in the season, King’s had lost a tough battle to Muhlenberg 1-2 in Salisbury, so they welcomed a chance to get the win this time. Muhlenberg, which was the top seed for the tournament would be the home team. This game turned out to be a pitchers battle. In the first, King’s had hits by Dlugosz and Rizzo, but could not score, and Muhlenberg went down 1-2-3. In the second, Purdy led off with a single, and scored all the way from first, on a single down the right field line by Betsy Carr. Again, Muhlenberg had no base runners in their half of the inning. Hawker had a hit in the 3rd, but did not advance. King’s threatened in the 5th, when Dlugosz hit a triple off the left-center field fence, but did not score. Patches allowed just 1 hit to get the shut-out and the win. The victory gave King’s their first ECAC championship!
