PENNSYLVANIA LAMBDA CHAPTER at Kings's College
On April 28, 1926, fifteen premedical students at the University of Alabama met with Dr. Jack Montgomery, premedical advisor and professor of organic chemistry, to formalize the organization of a new premedical honor society. Baylor University, Samford University, The University of Texas, and the University of South Carolina established chapters in 1928/29. At the first national convention at the University of Alabama on April 18, 1930, ten members representing five chapters and one petitioning group were in attendance. From these modest beginnings, Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED) has today become the world's largest Honor Society exclusively serving premedical education, with a membership exceeding 144,000 in 186 chapters. King's College is one of 10 chapters in the state of Pennslyvania. Alpha Epsilon Delta is a national honor society for students preparing for careers in medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, optometry, veterinary medicine, clinical laboratory science, as physician assistants or in basic sciences. The mission of the Society is to encourage and recognize excellence in premedical scholarship, to stimulate and appreciation of the importance of premedical education in the study of medicine, to promote cooperation and contact between medical and premedical students and educators in developing an adequate program of premedical education, to bind together similarly interested students, and to use its knowledge for the benefit of health organizations, charities and the community. It maintains a vigorous program of activities at national and local chapter levels. Each year the Society awards twenty scholarships to selected members upon enrollment in professional school. Fifteen $600.00 scholarships are awarded through the support of loyal alumni and five $1,000.00 scholarships are awarded from a membership assessment fund. The SCALPEL, an educational journal and the AED NEWSLETTER are the official Society publications. Alpha Epsilon Delta is a member of the Association of College honor Societies and an affiliated society of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. The Society is operated on membership fees paid at the time if initiation.
This one-time fee entitles new members to life membership in the Society. Mr Thomas Tobin, Associate Professor in Biology, is the advisor for the King's College chapter. He can be contacted for further information at tbtobin@kings.edu
